The honest answer is you can try to make it work but I think almost all long distance relationships end by the start of the Winter semester. The few people I know making it work have very strong reasons for being apart like both are in business school far apart, since you have similar lifestyles it can work. However, if they have plenty of free-time and you struggle to dedicate an hour for a phone call every few days then it causes problems.
The bigger the commitment the better the odds of survival. If you are married or even engaged then the likelihood of sticking it out is much higher.
