Volunteering abroad [#permalink]

Anyone got experience with volunteering abroad in 3rd world countries?
Right now I am doing IT stuff.... it absolutely robs my soul every moment. I was planning on applying to MBA this fall but I came across a friend who is doing volunteering in Vietnam through an NGO and I am very intrigued by such activity. I'm thinking that such experience is what i have been always wanting to do but never had the guts to "throw" everything away and do it.
Has anyone had any experience with volunteering abroad? And if so, what is the experience like and what happens when one returns from abroad back to the real world?
Is it realistic to think that I can just apply for MBA during/after the volunteering period and start go straight back to school after volunteering?

Hey, I know this is an old thread, but I just got back from a two-week volunteer abroad trip to India. You don't necessarily have to throw everything away to go volunteer abroad. Lots of volunteer abroad companies offer short-term placements in third world countries to gain international exposure and do good for those in need. PM me (anyone is welcome) and I'll give you more details about my trip. Ancientmtk wrote: Anyone got experience with volunteering abroad in 3rd world countries?
