Great to hear from you but I'm sorry it isn't under better circumstances! But all hope is not lost just yet. So let's see what we've got here.
1) A job change WILL be a bit of a flag. BUTTT - you're right to plan ahead. Because you might be applying this fall or next year (whichever) in which case a job change of this caliber will definitely be a great call. So I say do it - it's the right thing for you, your career, and your future applications.
2) Eh - I mean, ok - but it would have been more useful to speak to them in the first place to see how they positioned themselves. At this point, talk to students doing what you want to be doing. Look forward, not back. And besides, if you did what you're suggesting what would you even write here? More reasons for them to not take you?
3) I can't speak to this - I don't know what you submitted and I don't know if they're the best option. It doesn't sound like a bad idea though!
