Have any of you guys timed yourselves answering this question? I'm curious to know what an appropriate amount of time is to spend on it.

I dont want to play the Captain Obvious here, but it depends on your resume. A recent graduate and someone who changed ten places of work in past ten years or comes from some uncommon background will have different time allocations. Just keep it concise and informative.

If you take more than 2 minutes you need to be more concise. Much longer than that and you will come across as rambling. This really goes for any interview questions. You need to show you are capable of conveying the important information in a concise but thorough manner.

The flip side to that is, remember an interview is still like a conversation. If you are halfway through your rehearsed spiel and the interview interjects or show clear interest in something in particular then expand on that. Be flexible, if you don't say exactly what you had planned in your head that is ok. Just make sure you are paying attention to the person across the table.

Mine took around 3 mins, but I had some interesting transitions. Also, it depends on if they ask "walk me through your resume" or "tell me a bit about yourself" Also, agreed with the comment above, they will stop you in spots, and ask some questions, so... just dont ramble, but tell your story.

I always see this question as an opener for the rest of the interview so I don't think you should worry about how long it takes you to answer this. I usually only go as far as my first job before being stopped & asked about it, which leads to a 10-min conversation about it. Then we usually move on to my next job, and that's probably another 10-min conversation, and so it continues. My advice is just to know your own resume really well so you can answer anything they ask you and just go with the conversation flow :)

It depends how they ask it.

Dont over rehearse, but know what you're going to say. Think of it more as a powerpoint presentation, where you reference bullet points.

I think I started differently each time.

I have had a passion for.... since I was in High School, and I've carried that through my career.

While working full time in college I...

I began my career at... where I...
