B creating a special nongovernment organization that takes

C creating a special nongovernment organization for taking

D and create a special nongovernment for taking

E and create a special nongovernment to take

Its a parallelism problem. to revamp....to institure.......to create......Thus eliminate A,B,C.Between D and E , E is the correct answer.Because its to take not for take.

A.. B and C are not ||

it should be,
National Academy of Sciences has urged the nation to
-revamp computer security procedures,
-institute new emergency response teams,
-create a special nongovernment organization

D and E remains.

create to take is much better than create for taking ( created for taking sounds better)

So I will pick E.

bump.

I understand 'for doing' in this case sounds awkward. But, when do we use 'for doing' and and when do we use 'to do' ? Any rule on why this expression is unidiomatic here?

why do they want to a create a sp organisation ? they must have some solid rationale / some intent..........

INTENT : if this is the word then INFINITIVES who are always left behind, who always loom in the dark in gmatland...... ....cannot afford to miss this golden opurtunity and rush in at a mad pace to fill the vaccum.

Thus TO outscores FOR and E wins.

To express intent: Gmat prefers infinitive + verb over for + Gerund (which has some part of Noun. Gerund= Verb + Noun).
Thus "to take" (pure VERB--> action) is preferred over "for taking"

@mun23, I am afraid I will have to correct you here. While you are right in eliminating A,B,C on grounds of lack of parallelism, your reason to eliminate D is wrong.

D is wrong because "for taking" is a gerund and should modify a noun, while in this case modifying a verb "create" so this option is wrong.

I am mistaken. It seems "for taking" cannot be used to define a purpose. When you want to highlight the intention/purpose then we have to use to take. Otherwise there is no error with the usage of "for taking"

Someone please explain me the difference between to take and for taking.

Its simple. According to the gmat whenever the sentence indicates intent we need to use the infinitive form to+verb not verb-ing.

For example

The investors sold their stock rapildy, causing panic

Here the sentence indicates no intent from the investors to create panic but their act of selling their stocks rapidly did in fact create panic.

Lets look at the inifinitive form now.

The investors sold their stocks rapidly to create panic

Here the sentence indicates intent from the investors. Here their intent was to create panic. But in this sentence we do not know if they were successful in creating panic or not. Just that they wanted to.

Hopes its clear.

Please give a Kudos if you do appreciate my help

B creating a special nongovernment organization that takes
C creating a special nongovernment organization for taking
D and create a special nongovernment for taking
E and create a special nongovernment to take

the list to revamp.., institute..., and create should be parallel.
A - creating is not parallel.
B- creating is not parallel
C - creating is not parallel
D - create is parallel
E - Create is parallel
Between D and E create for taking and create to take is a tie.
Create to take is the correct usage.
Also in B 'that takes' is wrong usage, because the action is in future. that takes would be correct for an action in present

My answer to this question is E:

A. Parallelism is broken in this answer choice by using the word "creating." Since there are 3 elements in the list, the last element should be preceded by the word "and." Also, the word "creating" could be misunderstood to be a verb-ing modifier that modifies the preceding clause - this does not make any sense.

B. Same problems as A

C. Same problems as A

D. The only issue with this answer choice is "for taking." This is unidiomatic and doesn't sound correct.

E. This answer choice maintains problem parallelism with the other 2 elements in the list and "to take" correctly follows organization.

Could some experts tell me why D is not correct.

"for taking." : I understand thsi doesn't sound correct.

I am trying to understand the rule followed by GMAC to distinguish between what sounds awkward and what doesn't.

e gmat make an article about to do/for doing, I search on this forum but not find out. any one find the article, pls show the link

"to do" is used to show a purpose." for doing" modifies noun or verb and if it modifies verb it is not used to show purpose

but the following form og shows that "for doing" is acceptable to show purpose

what we should infer from gmat use of "for doing". gmat grammar rules are not declared and we have to infer the rules. This is one hard thing. The second thing is that some rules are not absolute but inferior.

In late 1997, the chambers inside the pyramid of the
Pharaoh Menkaure at Giza were closed to visitors for
cleaning and repair due to moisture exhaled by
tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so
that salt from the stone was crystallizing and fungus
was growing on the walls.
(A) due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which
raised its humidity to such levels so that salt
from the stone was crystallizing
(B) due to moisture that tourists had exhaled,
thereby raising its humidity to such levels that
salt from the stone would crystallize
(C) because tourists were exhaling moisture, which
had raised the humidity within them to levels
such that salt from the stone would crystallize
(D) because of moisture that was exhaled by
tourists raising the humidity within them to levels
so high as to make the salt from the stone
crystallize
(E) because moisture exhaled by tourists had raised
the humidity within them to such levels that salt
from the stone was crystallizing

expert, members, pls, discuss. Thank you.
