Fall 2012 Wharton Essays

Essays
• First-time applicants and reapplicants are required to complete the same set of essay questions.

REQUIRED QUESTION:

What are your professional objectives?

RESPOND TO 2 OF THE FOLLOWING 3 QUESTIONS:

1. Reflect on a time when you turned down an opportunity. What was the thought process behind your decision? Would you make the same decision today?

2. Discuss a time when you faced a challenging interpersonal experience. How did you navigate the situation and what did you learn from it?

3. "Innovation is central to our culture at Wharton. It is a mentality that must encompass every aspect of the School - whether faculty research, teaching or alumni outreach." - Thomas S. Robertson, Dean, The Wharton School

Keeping this component of our culture in mind, discuss a time when you have been innovative in your personal or professional life.

ADDITIONAL QUESTION FOR REAPPLICANTS:

All reapplicants to Wharton are required to complete the Optional Essay. Please use this space to explain how you have reflected on the previous decision on your application and to discuss any updates to your candidacy (e.g., changes in your professional life, additional coursework, extracurricular/volunteer engagements). You may also use this section to address any extenuating circumstances. (250 words)

If you are applying to Wharton this fall, now is just the right time to start working on the applications for R1.
I am a Wharton alum, and I would be happy to answer questions and help.

Essay Analysis & Comments

Xerox (Alumni) wrote:
I have been approached by quite a few prospective candidates asking for advice on "what's best to write for Wharton", i.e. what would the school want to hear.

My personal view, reinforced by what has worked for me is to decide on what parts of YOURSELF and YOUR story you want to showcase the most, i.e. what makes you unique and valuable, and deliver that using some creative writing. The question then becomes not that of execution, because good execution does not stand in the way. The only thing that matters is then whether YOU are indeed valuable and unique.

What makes you valuable and unique?

Xerox (Alumni) wrote:
My personal agenda during school visit would've always been "schmooze till you drop" in all the buildings there are.
Have a plan before you go: names, classes, visits, conversations, meetings, coffee, events after classes, etc.

WP06 (Current Student) wrote:
I have been reviewing alot of veteran candidate essays and I think the key to essays is to keep things simple, honest, and compelling.

There is no magic formula and the more "consultants" tell us to sprinkle in examples here and there, the more of the human element you lose.

I agree it is important to show the diversity of your experiences, but I believe is is most important to reveal the person you are, your core values, and how you interact with people, resolve conflict, improve, and work to help others.

After being here for nearly 2 months, I can already tell how the admissions process reflects the learning team model. Of course they want great candidates, but they are evaluating your leadership charactertistics - how do you resolve conflict, handle intense emotional events? are you conscientious aka do you step up for your team and help to resolve interpersonal disputes? are you comfortable in a variety of roles from leading to filling a supporting role? how far will you go to help your team achieve their goals? do your goals spring from your personal story and values? have your past actions matched up with your goals? what kind of personal impact do you bring here.

it is alot less about filling out a formula and a lot more about openness, integrity, and telling your compelling personal story rather than impressing the committee with accomplishments

i firmly believe the class is not selected solely according to accomplishments, but by selecting the best people who will create the strongest community/environment with the best possible longevity aka alumni network

i know the process sucks, and you guys/girls are stressed but after you craft your essays, take a second and look at how those essays reveal who you are, what makes you tick, focus on leadership but remember leadership has many components liek the ones i referred to - openness, conscientiousness, emotional reactivity, etc

PM me if you need any help, I was in your shoes last year, i definitely didnt have the most impressive stats but used my experiences to create a brand around leadership and values and it paid off

Application Submission Confirmation Text

Quote:
Thank you for submitting your application for Round One.

The following will provide you with information concerning the processing of application materials, timeline for the release of interview invitations, and final decision releases.

If your online account reads "Complete - Round One," your application has all the required materials, has been processed by the Operations Team, and has been forwarded to the Committee for review.

If your online account reads "Received," then the Operations Team needs to process your online application submission and any materials submitted by hard copy. After your materials have been processed (assuming they arrived before the Round One deadline), your online account will be changed to "Complete for Round One" and your file will be forwarded to the Committee for review. Due to the high number of candidates who submitted their application during the past few days (more than 60% of candidates applying for Round One submitted their application within 24 hours of the deadline), it will take the Operations Team a approximately a week to complete the processing of all materials. Therefore, please allow the Operations Team until Tuesday, October 11th before inquiring about the completeness of your application.

The Admissions Committee will release interview invitations between Thursday, October 27th and Friday, November 11th. Due to the nature and complexity associated with the admissions process there is no particular order in which invitations are released. Also on November 11th, the Committee will release all final admissions decisions to candidates that are not being invited for an interview and therefore no longer being considered for admission.

If you are invited for an interview, you will need to complete your interview by Friday, December 2nd. Interviews will be available on campus with second-year Wharton MBA Students who are full members of the Admissions Committee and off campus in various "Hubs" around the world by Admissions staff members. All interview options are equally considered within the admissions process.

Candidates who are offered an interview will receive their final admissions decision by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday, December 20th.

Thank you again for applying to Wharton. We look forward to reading your application.

Sincerely,
Wharton MBA Admissions Committee
Lauder Admissions Committee
Penn Law School Admissions Committee

I love it - I've been impatiently waiting for the "calling all 2012 applicant" threads. Anyway, I'm applying to Wharton - it's my reach school. I'm a former Army Infantry officer (6 yrs) and current Operations Manager for a top fortune 100 company. Thanks for kicking off this thread!

Wow, Can't believe 2012 season is here already! I started my application last year around early June and had to take a sick day from work the day of the R1 deadline to submit my application in time - its definitely never too early to start!

Right on WP, but there's no way I can accept help from a West Pointer ... totally kidding :-) I've read a lot of your posts (very helpful already), and I'm sure I'll be taking you up on that.

Does anyone know when the 2012 application will be posted? I want to see the essay questions.

I've also been waiting for the 2012 round. It's been an interesting mix of research, agony, and excitement. Definitely applying R1 this year. Look forward to our collective journey and meeting the recent admits too!

xerox,

At this point, I think I'll be throwing my hat in for R1. What I wonder is whether the essay questions will change much - otherwise, I have everything in line.

Stuck in prep mode for too long! By the time I start receiving R1 decisions, I'll have been in this process in one form or another for 18 months. Thankfully, I'm the busiest I've ever been so time isn't standing still, but I'm happy things are about to advance.

So xerox, aside from the standard campus visit, what are some things you recommend checking out if we trip to Wharton?

I will be applying to Wharton in R1. You all mention starting on the application now... what steps can be taken to start if the official application has not been posted yet?

You could start working on your goals essay and clarifying what your stated goals will be - the goals essay at Wharton was trimmed down to just 300 words but I ended up spending more time on that one than any of the other essays. You want your goals to be as specific and personalized as possible so it might require doing some research as well - now would be a good time to start researching the school as well.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have already visited the schools I will apply to and have researched them thoroughly. I just have not written anything for the applications to date. How much do the essays change year to year? The reason I have held off writing anything was because I assumed they would be changed.

I am in for round 1.

I'm very anxious for the application to be posted. I've been doing application prep for awhile now, but I'm ready for a tangible app to work on.

Good Luck to everyone!

Yeah, I'm pretty sick of doing all the self-assessments and being introspective. If I ponder about my life any further, I'm going to puke! :)

I hear you: self analysis does change the way we perceive ourselves. In my case, it made me almost completely indifferent to outside criticism; obscenities directed at me, rudeness of any kind did and do zero damage to my wonderfully immune self esteem. I went completely zen. :)

The problem with standard campus visits is that they are... well... standard: people aimlessly follow the crowd around campus, and a school volunteer tells them stories about buildings as if in a tour group. I have been a part of this experience on both sides: part of the crowd as a visitor, and a school volunteer as a group lead.

Key to efficient visits is shameless schmoozing. There is not a cookie cutter "one size fits all" solution - everyone's profile is different and everyone therefore needs to achieve different goals, i.e. meet different type of people during their visits.

So aim for a non-standard visit. You will know what goals to pursue and who to meet with during your visit if your application strategy is solid.

I do not know if the questions will change. Nobody does.

The good news is that it does not matter! You may work out a general framework now and tweak it later.

Schools may change questions from year to year, but the essence stays more or less the same: Why MBA, why now, why Wharton, your strengths and weaknesses, academics, extracurriculars, uniqueness, leadership, ability and liking for innovation, international focus, etc. Pick up a good admissions guide - it is all there.

You can safely start working on your goals essay - it will be there in one shape or another at any school. Guaranteed.

I'd appreciate it if any of you guys can let everyone else know when the new essay topics are posted. I'll certainly tell you if I find out before it is posted on this thread.

Good luck!

Hello,

I am very glad that this thread has now been started and have been looking forward to it for a while. Is anyone else looking to apply jointly to Wharton and SAIS in DC? Or do we have any current students or alumni out there? I have many many questions about the joint degree and would love to speak to someone who has been or is going through it.

Thank you!
