Wharton : Essay 2 - Failure or Setback [#permalink]

Wharton Essay # 2 Topic is:
2) (Required) Describe a failure or setback that you have experienced.
How did you respond, and what did you learn about yourself? (500 words)
The prompt mentions Failure OR Setback - can events in personal life, outside our control - death in the family, diagnosis of a medical condition, loss of property due to natural disaster, divorce, etc be considered a setback?
Any insights will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, but with a caveat. The point of this essay is to see introspection and how you overcome a difficult situation. The problem with events outside of your control is that it's harder to answer the "What did you learn about yourself" portion of it, if the event isn't directly related to something in your control. "I learned my ex-wife was a back stabbing bitch and if I just keep fighting her, I can win. This tought me how to win in life!" .... Just be careful here - the stories need to be about you, not about someone else.
I'd also caution against woe is me stories....
That being said, theres no reason you cant use this but you just need to make sure there is something real, tangible and valuable that you learned about yourself through the experience.

The failure or setback could be something out of your control but the focus should not be on it but on how you dealt with it. Obviously this will depend on what your failure was. I think they ask this to see how you act when things aren't going your way. I don't know if I'd use divorce, too easy to get into he-said she-said, and how relevant is it to b-school and your career path really?
