Since the interview is by invitation only, does it mean that the applicant has already received some approval on the rest of their applications, eg. GMAT, GPA, Essays?, or is the interview just another component, after which everything will be reevaluated?

Last year Wharton interviewed 55% of its applicants pool. It doesn't break down its admit percentages by rounds. An interview invitation does mean that you have passed some kind of preliminary review. AFter you interview, however, your file is evaluated with the interview data as part of the mix. The interview is not a make-or-break event; it is additional data.
