What are my chances? [#permalink] New post 31 Jul 2014, 00:47
Hi,

Can you give me an idea of my chances of getting into any of the top 10 schools. My profile is highlighted below:

1) Work exp: One year in a non-profit. Almost 6 years in the Risk assurance arm of a Big4 Audit firm doing both consulting and audit type work. Will have about 8 years’ experience by matriculation.
2) 710 GMAT (Q47, V40)
3) Education: Private university in Nigeria. GPA of 3.9 out of 5
4) College EC's: member of Student Government, Peer tutor, church volunteer.
5) Post-college EC's: Founding Board member of a committee at work, professional mentoring to new recruits, volunteer at church, photography, sports (volleyball & tennis)
6) Certifications: CISA (IT audit). Almost done with ACCA (Accounting) needed those two for my job.
7) Target programs: Preferred - Wharton, Booth, Stanford, Sloan, maybe Tuck. Any other schools I should consider?
8) Plan to apply during the fall of 2014 for R1
9) Post-MBA goals: Entrepreneurship (Agribusiness)
Short term - work in a startup in the food industry
Long term - start my own business
10) Applied to Booth in R3 last year (with 650 GMAT), was dinged after interview.
11) Will be 27 by matriculation. African Female

Hi there,

Thanks for posting and sharing, and congrats on the GMAT improvement.

I would identify the following strengths in your profile thus far just based on the info you shared here:

-solid work experience
-demonstrated quant skills
-solid GMAT
-very involved; would likely be involved at b-school
-less common nationality and plus-- schools appreciate strong female applicants
-certifications

Unknowns that could play a role:

-leadership experiences
-essays/recs/interviews

Potential weaknesses or challenges for you:

-It will be very important that you make a clear and compelling case for your goals, especially as it sounds as though you are looking to change industries as well as potentially roles (?). You want to come across as very sure that the MBA is the best next step for you and that you have a definite need for it and can envision what you will do with it (also important as you are a bit more experienced than average applicants). This will be important in the essays and very important in the interview.
-GPA could be stronger

In terms of top 10, it probably will be a bit of a challenge, so you may want to choose 1-2 schools you are most interested in, then also apply to a few in the approx 10-25-ish range for best chances.

Good luck and keep us posted on q's and how everything goes!
