BS - 3.6
MS - 3.6

GMAT - 680 (Q49, V33),
Essay 5.5

Background :
31 yr Indian male, with 8 years of work experience in IT. Have had a relatively non-eventful employment history.

Schools in my list : Harvard, Wharton, Sloan

Questions:
1) I am pretty sure, I can increase my quant score (a little bit to tip my score over 700), if I retake gmat. But is it worth it ?
2) Is my verbal score too bad for these schools. Can my essay score of 5.5 compensate for the relatively poor verbal score (33).
3) Would you recommend that I look into other schools including some tier 2 colleges or should I hold my guns and apply to the above schools of my choice ?

thanks,

Your challenge will really be in terms of differentiating yourself. Your quant score is good enough right now to get into any top school. Increasing it won't help you differentiate yourself, so it's not worth taking the GMAT again to improve your quant score. Your verbal score is a little low, but your AWA score is strong. So, it's not critical that you take the test again, but if you're confident that you can improve your verbal score, go ahead and try.

However, you really need to think about what differentiates you from other, similar applicants. Your background sounds very common, unfortunately. Unless there's something in your professional background or (even better) something outside of work that makes you unique, then I might think about aiming at some lower-ranked schools if I were you. I don't mean to tell you to give up on your dreams, but just be aware that your odds of success at a top school may be low unless you can really set yourself apart.

Also, your age puts you at the top end of the typical range of b-school applicants. Adcomms will likely notice this, so you'll need to provide a solid reason why now is the right time for you to go to school.

Best,
Scott

Greetings,

I concur that the profile (as described) does not set the applicant apart from so many other applicants.

I am also intrigued by question 3) regarding the choice of schools. Why have you chosen these three particular schools? Granted, these are all fine schools but you have excluded so many other schools that have overlapping strengths.
