What are the pros and cons of retaking the GMAT [#permalink] New post 09 May 2011, 10:21
Hello,

I am scheduled to take the GMAT test on May 18th, 2011. My target score is >680. However, at this point of time I am not very confident about my preparation and not sure if I can achieve my target score. I have two options :

1) Taking the test and see how I do in the test and go from there.

2) Postpone the exam to a later date and prepare accordingly.

I am not very sure about the various pros and cons (not sure if there are any pros) for retaking the test. I was told that it might have a negative impact on admission decisions. So, guidance in this regard is much appreciated.

I prefer the first option, however all your suggestions are most welcome.

Thank you in advance,

B

My take is - 2) Postpone the exam to a later date and prepare accordingly.

Why?!
It saves you 250$.
a single 700 is a score report is better than a 550 and 700.
You would not be very disspointed with your score if you take a GMAT prep instead of GMAT and do not receive what you want. :)

I think there is a $50 fee to reschedule your exam, but only more than 7 days out. If it's less than 7 days, you forfeit the entire $250.

Having two scores on your GMAT report is not necessarily a bad thing as most schools take your highest one day score, I believe.

A lot of people take the GMAT twice, or even three times and improve their scores substantially. However, you definitely do not want to get a lower score on your retakes.

If I were you, I would take it now. You might surprise yourself with your score! But if you find that you'll need to take it again, you'll already be accustomed to the testing experience and chances are you won't be as nervous your second time.

Good luck, whatever you choose!

If you are not comfortable, reschedule before it is too late. Dont use the GMAT as a practice test! GMAT has free prep software for that.
