What did Gordon Gekko actually do?

As in what was his job function/area? As in S&T, M&A? Or was it the closest to what is today known as Private Equity?

Wikipedia says "corporate raider". But that is not a job you get hired into from b-school. So what did he actually do?

He was a private investor (think someone like Carl Icahn). Some of what he did was trading ("Money never sleeps pal, I just made $800,000 in Hong Kong gold"), and some was more private equity (buying Blue Star and planning to break it up and sell it) - although he was investing his own money not raising a fund from investors.
