What do MBA's do at Google?

Do you have any idea about the ranges in salary within sales positions?

Well, one of my friends has a base salary around $120K (plus bonuses + incentives that put the gross around 200k). I would think that the sales positions would at least be on par with the product MBAs.

I have a friend in corporate finance at google. Says its hte most amazing job ever.

I have a friend who works in the tech industry in the Bay Area. He has masters from Stanford and has worked for startups and small companies for years. He calls the people that work at Google, especially the ones that got rich off the IPO "Googlef*ckers". Ther term is part jealousy and part term of endearment I guess. Everyone wishes the startup they work at will turn out like Google.

Without at doubt, Google is a really popular place to work. I have heard, however, that the place is run by the engineers and that MBAs don't necessarily get much respect or have great prospects for advancement. I guess it's like most industries, if work in a support function (at Google anything other than new tech development I guess) you're future prospects are limited. Kind of like working in HR at a big company or something.

I have a friend who got an offer from Google to work in their Latin American marketing dept. for his summer internship. He ended up elsewhere, but they had offered him a marketing related project.

My wife has a few classmates that work at google. They work an insane amount of hours, thats really the reason they have all the cool perks...it helps keep them sane. She had a job offer from them and they pay well and have good benefits buts after talking to her friends that have gone to work for them it didnt seem worth it over her job that is 40-50 hrs a week not 70+.

Well I have lots of friends at Google. The MBAs usually work in Program Management/Strategy. They work on business development and strategy formulation.

I think Google also has an Investment arm that looks at investing in new ventures outside the company and is involved in M&A kind of activities.

So the answer to the original question has been solved:

What do MBAs do at Google? They buy Youtube!

Google is buying companies left and right, but I think they still rely on outside bankers (Morgan Stanley & CSFB I think) to do their deals. Many of the big tech companies do run their own in house P/E funds though. Cisco has a very big one run by a Darden alum.

Yeah even INTEL has one called Intel Capital. Its a great place to work.

I tried changing jobs to join the Corp Stgy at HP and they turned me down saying that I need a MBA from a top school + a few years of MC or IB experience. Last year HP Office of Corp Stgy was hiring several MBA for associate role.

so maketing/biz dev MBAs at google work over 70+ hours? Wow i thought the point of going to silicon valley is for the awesome lifestyle. If it's 70, 80 hours, why not just go to MC or IB? I think the advancement opportunities, exit options, salary increases should be better than Google right?

The total salaries at Google (for marketing/biz dev) probabaly won't go much higher than 150K or so right, unless you're very very senior. The stocks probably won't go much higher, so the options probably aren't worth much. And If you leave, are you going to find a better tech job than Google? probably not. So it's like you're stuck there.

Am I missing something? Or is the work really really interesting?

On the other hand, working for the investment arms of tech companies such as Intel Capital wounds pretty good. I assume the compensation should be awesome and lifestyle decent. Not to mention you can possibly exit to PE or some other top finance jobs. But the question is, how do you get those jobs? Do they actively recruit on campus? Because on the websites they just list the regular old marketing/biz dev/engineeering jobs.

I think something recently came out saying that Google just topped McKinsey as the most desirable place to work for MBAs.

Yep BW rated Google as number 1 and Mckinsey as #2, the first time in like 13 years Mickinsey was not numero uno!

It must have been really close, because McK is still number 1 for men (who represent the majority of MBAs.

Among many other things, a lot of sales!
