What is a special/unique candidate/profile for HBS/S? [#permalink] New post 07 Jan 2013, 13:12
I was wondering if any admission consultants or anyone really, can explain the 'typical' or 'a-typical' type of people who are accepted into HBS/Stanford.

I know it varies, and it depends etc. However what kind of profiles makes HBS go "hmmm let me give him an interview"?

Because whenever I read things on HBS and Standford etc, some people will say 'you need to do something special for Harvard/Standford to consider you etc' what is that something special?? An example would be great.

Hi,

You asked a great question. The "something special" is not necessary based on a particular profile, but the ability to convey a consistent brand/theme based on your experience, passion, and strength. You would demonstrate that through your application essays and ask your recommenders to help reinforce the brand/theme you want to convey.

Stanford really wants to understand what motivates you, your values, and your career goals. For HBS, you want to demonstrate a habit of leadership.

We can review your info and discuss potential themes with you if you are interested in getting admissions consulting help. Please feel free to send me your info http://marveladmissions.com/contact-us/

Good luck!

Well, who gets into H/S??? People who
1. Have always been amongst the best - so you get a disproportionate amount of people who are valedictorians, with super good awards, etc. etc. This applies to both academic and professional lives
2. The well-connected and wealthy - People don't like to admit this, but this helps... I mean if you come into the school with your dad running a huge family business, well then... If you were a pro sport player, a famous TV personality, etc. this also helps
3. The amazingly dedicated - You see a lot of go-getter types here. People who have already spent five years teaching in Africa, or developing their own startup
4. The successful - Do you already have two startups in your name? Have you already led huge projects with lots of people? registered three patents? written a book? etc. etc.

These are not the only types who get in, but lots of folk come from one of the types above...
