The ranking of the school or the program more important? [#permalink] New post 05 Mar 2013, 07:21
I recently got into MBA program with full tuition scholarship. It is not one of top 20 or 25 MBA schools but it has got the very good MIS program, which is in top 20 in the nation. I am wondering if I should go to that school or not since it is just mid-table MBA program in terms of general ranking. The only thing I am worried about is the career opportunities after the degree.

Congratulations! You're asking the right question bu the ranking isn't determinative.

1) First determine what you want to do after your MBA. If you arent' sure, what do you most likely want to do?

2) Then look at the schools employment report and ask questions about it. Are grads getting the kinds of jobs you want at the companies you want to work for? Ask school reps and ask current students and recent alumni.

3) Then look at the curriculum. Are you going to learn what you want to learn? In the way you want to learn it?

4) Finally, look at extracurricular activities? Do any appeal? Do any relate to and support your goals? Will they provide the chance to meet the companies you want to work for?

5) Spoke to soon. Finally, consider simply personal preference. Do you want to leave at this place for two years and be a part of this community for the rest of your life?

You need to determine if this school takes you where you want to go? If it does, congratulations! Grab that free ride and enjoy! If it doesn't take you to your desired destination, then it still costs you two years and I don't think it makes sense to do.

Best,
Linda
