What is the greatest common factor of the positive integers x and y?
(1) y = x + 1
(2) xy is divisible by 5.

Can anyone explain how to solve this?

A

S1: x and y are consecutive positive integers so the gcf is 1 -> S1 is sufficient
S2: For xy to be divisible by 5, either x or y has to be a multiple of 5.
pick numbers,
x = y = 5 -> gcf=5
x = 5 and y=1 -> gcf = 1
S2 is insufficient

A for me too.

state 1- consecutive integers have only 1 as common factor. hence, gcf=1

statement 2- xy=20 /10/35

hence the values of x and y change accordingly and so does theor GCF. hence, insuff.
