I am trying to gain a perspective of how the two things compare in an overall application and whether which has a better chance of getting you inside the school and if possible scholarship.

In terms of Percentages

Just type your choice in the form of.

W 50% (Work Experience)
G 15% (Gmat)
E 20% (Essay)
R 5% (Referrals)
X 10% (Extra Curricular) I would imagine B schools would want to see some helping nature in students.

By the way, I seen the knewton video, so need to post it again.

Well since your work experiences comes through your essays, I would make the essays much more important.

1/3 GMAT score
2/3 Essays

Even then you will be submitting your profile 1 page to them which they will certainly look at to gain a brief outline, would one really start going though a long essay without looking at a work profile.
