SOLUTION

What is the radius of the circle above with center O?

(1) The ratio of OP to PQ is 1 to 2.

(2) P is the midpoint of chord AB.

The answer to this question is straight E. Even when we consider the statements together we only have the ratios, not absolute values of any line segment.

Questions asks the absolute value and none of the options gives an absolute value (Both of them gives ratios).

From S1:OP:PQ=1:2
OQ=radius.It's not possible to calculate a single value for rad based on ratio.Insufficient
From S2:P=midpt of chord AB
Again this implies triangles OAP & OQP are congruent but gives no unique value can be calculated based on this.Insufficient.
Combining the two,we do get any absolute value for radius.

Statement (1) says PQ= 2OP, giving multiple values for the radius. Insufficient

Statement (2) has no relationship with the radius whatsoever, hence Insufficient

Together, (1) and (2) are clearly not sufficient.

Hi Bunuel,

Would anything have changed if they either A) Provided the area of QPB or B) If they mentioned that the AB was the radius and it was cut in half?

My guess is that if they provided the area, we could get the value of AQB and equate the earlier ratio of OP to PQ. This would give us the diameter essentially and we could get the radius from that. Is that correct?

Statement 1 gives a ratio so clearly insufficient
Statement 2 gives information that can already be inferred from the question stem so clearly insufficient
combining we don't get any new information
clearly the correct answer is option - E
