There are 1 the largest triangle formed by 16 small triangles. Total 17 triangles. There are triangles formed by 4 small triangles: 7 such triangles. And there are tiangles formed by 9 small triangles: 3 such triangles.
Total 17+7+3=27.

The correct answer is D.

Also, is there any formula/procedure to solve this question?

I don't see any problem with this task to be not a GMAT question. I think it is more than possible to solve it in 2 minutes. I don't know any formula for this problem, just the logic. If we talk about procedure I can only suggest that you should go from the smallest triangles to the largest. I attach similar problem

I doubt of these kind of questions are used by GMAC.

Anyways, in my opinion, questions like these require more of patience than time.

Size - No of Squares
4 - 1
3 - 4
2 - 9
1 - 18
0.5 - 8

Total - 40
