What is the value of x^2 - 4y^2?

Remember that a^2-b^2=(a-b)(a+b). Thus x^2 - 4y^2=x^2-(2y)^2=(x-2y)(x+2y).

(1) x - 2y = 0. Since one of the multiple is zero, then the product is zero. Sufficient.
(2) x + 2y = 0. The same here: since one of the multiple is zero, then the product is zero. Sufficient.

Answer: D.

Hope it's clear.
