What is the value of |x + 7| =?
(1) |x + 3|= 14
(2) (x + 2)^2 = 169
A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

IMO, it is C. But OA says it is D? Can the DS gurus step in and help.

I guess you are right. It is C.

(1) |x + 3|= 14 --> x e {-17,11} --> |x+7| can be 10 or 18. insufficient
(2) (x + 2)^2 = 169 --> |x+2|=13 --> x e {-15,11} --> |x+7| can be 8 or 18. insufficient
(1&2) x=11 --> |x+7|=18. sufficient

i also think it should be C
(1) |x + 3|= 14 --> x is either 11 or -17 so |x + 7| will have two answers. INSUFFICIENT
(2) (x + 2)^2 = 169 --> x is either -15 or 11 --> |x+7| can be 8 or 18. INSUFFICIENT

But (1) and (2) together give commmon value of x i.e 11
So answer hould be C
