(1) 3|x2(readx square) – 4| = y – 2

(2) |3 – y| = 11

Please explain the approach

S1: Two variables, therefore no set value for y, insufficient

S2: y can be -8 or 14, insufficient

S1+S2: No help as S1 does not help in choosing between -8 and 14

Should be C.
(1) INSUFF
(2) gives y = 14 or -8 INSUFF

From (1) and (2)
3|x^2-4| = 14-2 or -8-2

|x^2-4| has to be +ve, so y=14, SUFF

I am observing since last few days that you solve the problem correctly, but don't give detailed solution....is this the part of strategy? :)

y= ?

From 1
3|x^2– 4| = y – 2

X and Y could be many numbers. But y >= 2 as abs( ...... ) >= 0.

INSUFF.

From 2
|3 – y| = 11

o If 3-y >= 0, then:
3 – y = 11
<=> y = -8

o If 3-y < 0, then:
-(3 – y) = 11
<=> y = 14

So, y could be -8 or 14.

INSUFF.

Both 1 and 2
We know that:
o y >= 2
and
o y = -8 or y = 14

Thus, y = 14.

SUFF.

yah, you are right. my strategy is to give others chance to make their explanation so that we all can learn different approaches and opinions. This also enhances more opinions.

Some mistirious questions need to be waited for a while for more effort by others. :-D :-D :-D
