One of my recommenders is taking a lot of time to send the LOR. I already talked to her a couple of weeks ago trying to get her send the letter faster and I thought she got the message, but I'm still waiting...
What should I do to speed up the process? This is the last piece of my application and I just want to get this over with.
First time I talked to her on Dec 15, she said yes, then I gave her the forms on Dec 20 and she's been sitting on this since then.
I thought about sending her some flowers to thank her for helping me, maybe she'll understand.
I don't want to look like I'm bribing her but I don't see any other way...
what do you guys think?

My approach to reminding someone (particularly my supervisees) to do something they haven't done yet is to ask if I can help out at all. This reminds them they have the task, you're not nagging, and it shows that it's important to you.
Last week I had someone making a bunch of media contacts, but she hadn't done it on Thursday. It had to get done on Friday, so I said, "thanks so much for taking this on. By the way, I wrote up these handy media talking points - you're welcome to use them if you think they might help. Is there anything else I can do?"

hey there. i had the exact same problem as you. One of my recommenders didn't finish the LOR until nearly 2 months after I sent him the forms. I turned in my apps maybe 2 weeks before he sent in the LOR. I was pooping in my pants thinking about the submission. I actually called him twice before he actually picked up. I think I either emailed, called, IMed him once every two days because he was very bad at responding back.
In fact, he had finished the letter but just was bad about uploading the document. it was very strange...but at least he finally turned it in..
i would just tell the recommender up front what is going on and the importance of their reco.

I had this problem. So I approached it in a very honest manner: "Hey Bob, listen I really need you to put that rec together. The apps are due in two weeks. If you can't do it, I understand, but you gotta tell me now so I can find someone else."
Note: They were actually due in a month.
