What structure will correctly following the dash?? [#permalink] New post 05 Apr 2008, 12:08
A mixture of poems and short fiction, Jean Toomer’s Cane has been called one of the three best novels ever written by Black Americans—the others being Richard Wright, author of Native Son, and Ralph Ellison, author of Invisible Man.

A. Black Americans—the others being Richard Wright, author of Native Son, and Ralph Ellison, author of Invisible Man
B. Black Americans—including Native Son by Richard Wright and Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
C. a Black American—including Richard Wright, author of Native Son, and Ralph Ellison, author of Invisible Man
D. a Black American—the others being Richard Wright, author of Native Son, and Ralph Ellison, author of Invisible Man
E. a Black American—the others being Richard Wright’s Native Son and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man

Normally in gmat, hyphen (-) is not tested. What is given is supposed to be correct. So we only deal with correct choice and no choice has a problem with hyphen (-).

One Novel is "Jean Toomer’s Cane" and the others are Richard Wright’s Native Son and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man.

so E.

Is the OA E? E looks to be the only option with good parallelism - Jean Toomer's Cane, Richard Wright's Native Son and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man.
I did not understand what you meant by 'the being shortcut does not work here..'

Two years later...OA is E.
For me is between B and E, since are the only that lists novels rather than authors.
Please, could anybody explain what's wrong with B?

Jean Toomer’s Cane and the others are Richard Wright’s Native Son and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man.. IS THE RIGHT CONSTRUCTION.

And I don't think GMAT will test only this error, sentence will have one or more error.
