Whats wrong with my verbal? [#permalink] New post 22 Sep 2010, 03:22
Dear All,

I am really worried about my verbal and would like to have some advise from GMATclub friends and experts.

In my first GMATPrep CAT, i scored 35 in verbal while my quant score was 44. My target score in quant is 50+ and verbal is 42+. My test date is Dec 2nd.

I did a lot of work in quant the last month and my score has really improved. The last Knewton CAT I gave, my quant was 49 (made two mistakes which were really silly mistakes). I will iron out my flaws and come back strong. I am confident that I will get to my 50+ score in quant if I continue working hard.

Before that, the first 2 months I did a lot of SC, CR practice and was feeling somehow confident. I took some tests and my verbal score ranged between 35-38. I thought I was about to reach my tipping point and would soon start consistently hitting 40 mark.

Somehow, I have hit upon a wall in Verbal :(. I am faring even worse in practice assignments and CATs. I've done a lot of work in verbal but there seems to be no improvement! In the last Knewton CAT, my verbal was a dismal 31.

I know where I am going wrong. Its mostly psychological. These days, when I read verbal questions, I am not able to register the details, something I was able to do effortlessly earlier (when I had zero preparation). Please tell me what I am heading to? I am really jittery about verbal. Now I have to work my way from 31 to 42 which is a daunting task.

I have a reading habit and I've read a few of the books mentioned in the GMAT Fiction. I dont understand how do I motivate myself. I've read MGMAT SC, LR Bible and did SC/CR from OG11. I use an error log too.

To make matters worse, my SC accuracy has gone down too - which I'd improved after a lot of efforts in the first 2 months of my prep. Nothing is going right for me at this moment. Please advise whether its normal. Is there anything I wouldve to do differently? Should I take a few days off my prep?

I would be delighted to hear from you.

Regards,
Y

If I were you, I'd take a few days off and gather yourself/clear your head. It's probably mostly psychological right now. After a few days off, devise a written plan of attack. Go through MGMAT SC again and make sure you use the error log to your full advantage. Prepping well is not the number of practice questions you do, but what you learn from the ones you get incorrect. If your SC accuracy is going down, that is probably the reason your overall V score is dropping. Make sure to focus on SC during the rest of your studies.

use error log, also review the basics and see if you fully understand them.

I agree with some of the comments above - I would take a few days off to clear your mind and just relax. Then I would look at your error log to identify where you are going wrong most often. Hopefully that will be enough to turn the ship.

You need to take a few days off your pre, and come back stronger. Do not skip a while week though. Do some light reading while you are taking a break. Also try other materials too, mix it up.

I would be delighted to hear from you.

Y

Candidly: I think that verbal is probably the hardest thing to improve on. Quant can be quickly learned by nearly anybody with a decent brain and sufficient motivation. Excellence on the verbal, on the other hand, comes from fluency in the English language and an understanding of good writing. I think that the latter comes from years of reading and writing. For better or worse, many b-school candidates simply haven't put in the time reading books and learning to write essays.

You still have time to improve your score, as you're not taking the test until December. Use the MGMAT books and maybe hire a tutor? I'd personally -- disclaimer, this might not be the best approach for you -- drop the diagramming tricks if you're using them. I find them to be a waste of precious time that would be better spent really trying to understand the passage, questions, and answer choices.

Hi yossarian84,

I'm sorry to hear about your recent frustrations.

It's important to remember that too much stressful practice can cause your scores to plateau or even decline from the brain overload and resulting anxiety... which will only make you more stressed, and prolong the vicious cycle. I'd agree with the other posters: Take a few days off. Let your brain rest!

You don't want to burn yourself out. Once you return to studying, be sure to spread out your practice tests. Don't try to take one every day! Set aside time to review your mistakes and make sure you understand exactly where you went wrong. Are you unfamiliar with the concept, or did you just make a careless mistake? If you like, you can take note of the questions you got wrong, and put them aside for a week. After a week, give yourself a new quiz made up of problems that you previously missed. Did you remember the correct solution or make the same mistakes? Repeat this weekly personalized quiz to hammer home the topics that you need to work on!

Good luck - and don't forget to enjoy your mini-GMAT prep vacation!
