Just curious, how do you know when your essays are ready? I'm on the 17th edit of some of mine and feel like I'm getting to a point where there's not much more I can do. However, every few days I seem to find a better way to word a sentence or add a tidbit that previously wasn't there. I'm submitting 6 applications for R1 and I don't want to wait until the last week to submit all of them so I'd like to do it in phases starting the last week in September. Is there a magic moment when you read an essay and realize, this is it?

They never are. Honestly. I used to scoff at stories from the Fall 2008'ers about how they wrote 20-30 drafts of their goals essay. And then I ended up with 17 drafts myself before I decided to call it a day. 17 is the magic number these days it seems.

At some point the law of diminishing returns takes hold and the amount of time you expend on making your essays just a little better is better spent on a different school's application. Especially if you're doing 6 applications for R1.

Give yourself a deadline, and once that deadline is here, wrap up your essays and move on.

I certainly haven't had 17-20 drafts like I'm reading about others having, but I've had probably 10 or so. Then again, I did a ton of up-front work mapping out my background and experiences, and writing out detailed outlines before starting on the draft. With that said, each time I open my essays, I find things I could tweak, but that won't really improve the effectiveness of the essays. So, I just finalized the damned things and moved on.
