IMO: E.
As 'when' indicates time, Action should follow in second clause. 'When children become teenagers' should follow something about children. So, A & D are eliminated. Between B,C & E, 'B' lacks parallelism between because their sense of smell is heightened and because of their taste buds changing. 'C' uses wrong use of due to.
Choice (E) is correct in all aspects.

When children become teenagers, scientists believe that their sense of taste begins to evolve more because their sense of smell is heightened than because their taste buds change.
A: scientists believe that their sense of taste begins to evolve more because their sense of smell is heightened than because their taste buds change their is ambiguous - does it refer to scientists or children? Incorrect B: their sense of taste evolves, scientists believe, more because their sense of smell becomes heightened than because of their taste buds changing. their corresponds to children because atleast one occurrence of that pronoun refer to subject clearly, before scientists are mentioned. becomes heightened and taste buds changing are not parallel - Incorrect C: their sense of taste evolves, scientists believe, due more to their sense of smell heightening than their taste buds changing. due is awkward and breaks the grammar. Incorrect D: scientists believe that their sense of taste begins to evolve more because their sense of smell is heightening than because their taste buds are changing. Same problem as A - their is ambiguous. Incorrect E: their sense of taste begins to evolve, scientists believe, more because their sense of smell becomes heightened than because their taste buds change. Correct, IMO. their corresponds to children because atleast one occurrence of that pronoun refer to subject clearly, before scientists are mentioned. becomes heightened and taste buds change are parallel

OA Ya i agree with u all guys E solves modifier error... But what about pronoun "their" refer to children/ scientists ? Is scientists collective noun ? Also is "scientists believe" Independent clause or modifier ? Can any one cite on this!!

E: their sense of taste begins to evolve, scientists believe, more because their sense of smell becomes heightened than because their taste buds change. OA Hii. I'll try to find different errors in the answer choices. D: scientists believe that their sense of taste begins to evolve more because their sense of smell is heightening than because their taste buds are changing. As umeshpatil told, WHEN MODIFIES TIME. So we can't use a helping verb here. Otherwise the sentence becomes like this: When you look closely at the house, it is on fire. They are composed of thousands of particles when viewed up close. Always remember, "when" acts as a modifier in a time frame and it will modify the time frame only. B: their sense of taste evolves, scientists believe, more because their sense of smell becomes heightened than because of their taste buds changing. In a prepositional phrase, noun + Ing form of verb can't co-exist. what does "scientists believe" modifies. Left side or right side. This ambiguity remains in correct choice also, hence The correct answer is just the best of the lot but not the ideal. Rest all mistakes are quite visible IMO.
