When should I retake? [#permalink] New post 11 Jan 2010, 19:29
Hi all,
So I took the GMAT yesterday....
Total 590
Quant 41
Verbal 30

Obviously, not too happy. I have couple of questions...

1) How long should I take for preparing, before retaking the exam? (I do have a day job right now that I intend to keep).
Obviously, my Verbal needs a lot of work!
I want to hear about other people's experiences in this matter.

2) What material (books, software, etc) should I be studying? I aiming for 680-700.
I studied from OG 12. The verbal in that book is so easy compared to the stuff that I saw on the exam. No comparison.
I also studied from Princeton Review book.
and I took the 2 exams from GMATPrep software.

Thanks.

Also, I would like to add...

I am in no hurry to go to MBA school, so I have no time lines based on that.
I just want to retake the exam at the right moment. When everything that I have studied so far is still fresh AND I have improved on my verbal.

Any tips, thoughts, helpful links, etc are welcome.

Hi Syshs - welcome to GMAT Club!

Take a look at this thread for some basic info: should-i-retake-gmat-thread-retaking-gmat-strategies-83339.html

I would also suggest that you get a study plan and a gmat calendar of sorts. Something like this: gmat-study-plan-go-from-650-to-80235.html

It sounds like your prep materials can use an upgrade - see this discussion: top-gmat-prep-books-guides-reviews-comments-77703.html

My suggestion is not to take a very long time to prep and schedule a retake - it is a balance obviously when you have a demanding job, but the longer you wait, the more chances that you will get burnt out or will forget what you learned a few months ago. I'd say don't wait more than 2-3 months since you have done some prep (this assumes you are doing some hole patching). If you are planning a major overhaul, you can go as long as 3-4 months.

You should easily see 100+ points in 2-3 months by just upgrading your prep materials.
BB.
