When the government of a nation announced recently that a leader of the nation’s political opposition had died of a mysterious illness in prison, few seasoned observers of the regime were surprised. As the police captain in an old movie remarked when asked about the condition of a prisoner, “We’re trying to decide whether he committed suicide or died trying to escape.â€

Down to C and E.

E is extreme, in my opinion.

Going with C

I think the answer is E.
The reason the example of the movie was given was to show that the regime was most likely responsible for the death.
I wouldn't pick C because there is no mention of any head of regime.

Another for E. The last sentence doesn't say that the regime doesn't know if the prisoner died but how he died. And it's pretty obvious is someone died trying to escape (bang, bang). Someone had to be involved in that.

E.
There is no guarantees whether the head of the regime knows how the opposition died. He might, and he might not, therefore, C can't be right.

There must be a reason to commit suicide, he must have been thrown in prison in the first place by the ruling party, therefore, the regime should be responsible for his death whether it's suicide or killed in an escape attempt.

go with (E).
In the premise, “We’re trying to decide whether he committed suicide or died trying to escape.â€

E.

But this sounds suspiciously unlike a GMAT question. For one thing, the author had a sense of humour. For another, the answer actually makes sense.

What gives?

I will go with E. The argument says few are suprised about the death which means that many must have thought that he will definetly die in the prison.
