when to take GMAT? [#permalink] New post 06 Aug 2010, 22:39
I will be applying to Fall 2012 programmes, so I have plenty of time to prepare and take GMAT. During the next year and a half, I will also be studying other courses (in preparation for application ) such as maths, stats etc (I am appling to quant PhD in business). I am trying to plan my studies so that they won't run in parallel. GMAT is the most flexible so far, I can sit the exam almost any month, so I am trying to figure out when to do it.

If I do it in the next three-four months, to get it done and over with before my math courses begin, and will send out the results to schools during the sitting, they will receive them more than a year before I will send my application form. What will they do with the my GMAT report? How long will they keep it on file before they through it away? Is there a standard rule?

Welcome to GMAT Club!

1. The GMAT is changing in 2012 (will include one more section instead of one of the essays). This may be a reason to take it sooner than later (less hassle). At the same time you push it out to 2013, your report will stand out since it will be based on the old format. Some schools also prefer "fresh" gmat scores - meaning the ones from the past 2 years due to an increasing number of college graduates taking GMAT fresh out of college, working a few years and then going to business school. The test results end up being not very representative.
2. Your scores are sent to schools electronically. The old rule with paper used to be - send a new score report for each application yet. I think this still holds with electronic records but may vary by school.
3. I would suggest to send the score reports (it's free for 5 schools) and then in 2011-2012 follow up with them and see if they still have the records (they probably will). If they don't, you can pay the fee to re-send them

Sorry, I misspoke - it is 2012.
(Originally scheduled for 2013, it got moved down by a year, to 2012). I thought it was originally scheduled for 2012 and moved down to 2011. Apologies for misinformation - my dyslexia :)

bb, thanks for the useful information! last time I took GMAT was in 1999 (for my MBA application) and then the reports and the test were still paper based )))

If the schools receive my score electronically, it is much easier for them to keep it on records. Then I will plan my exam schedule so that to sit for GMAT and send the scores sooner rather than later, ie before end of this year. I am not concerned about one or two years 'fresher' since I've been out of graduate school for 7 years now (I am MBA grad). Clearly they won't think I'd be one of the cases you mentioned above ))))

Good suggestion about f/up with the schools to check if they have my score before requesting a re-send.

BTW I welcome the GMAT change, it's been a while, the same boring old tasks... Not much change from 1999 except for CAT format.

Definitely good luck!
I am not sure about the change and new section - I am kind of excited based on the video but my guess is that the video was made with that purpose, to ease the transition ;)

I prefer to take it before the change haha.

BB, do you know if grad school will still accept that old form of GMAT after the newer form has been released?
