C it is. Just to add to E's flaw is that it compares gerund "the understanding" to present participle "grasping" and is thus not parallel

Thanx
gerund and present participle are both words which end in -ing. The difference is that the gerund plays the role of a noun whereas the present participle plays the role of a verb. Let's take some examples:
gerund: Eating in a hurry is not good --> "eating in a hurry" plays the role of a noun. It is also the subject of the sentence and could be replaced by any noun "X"
present participle: It is not good when you are eating in a hurry --> "are eating" is part of the verb of dependent clause "when you are eating in a hurry" where the subject is "you"
