Whenever a major airplane accident occurs, there is a dramatic increase in the number of airplane mishaps reported, a phenomenon that may last for as long as a few months after the accident. Airline officials assert that the publicity given the gruesomeness of major airplane accidents focuses media attention on the airline industry and the increase in the number of reported accidents is caused by an increase in the number of news sources covering airline accident, not by an increase in the number of accidents.

Which of the following, if true, would seriously weaken the assertions of the airline officials?

(A) The publicity surrounding airline accidents is largely limited to the country in which the crash occurred.
(B) Airline accidents tend to occur far more often during certain peak travel months.
(C) News organizations do not have any guidelines to help them decide how severe or how close an accident must be for it to receive coverage.
(D) Airplane accidents receive coverage by news sources only when the news sources find it advantageous to do so.
(E) Studies by government regulations show that the number of airplane flight miles remains relatively constant from month to month

The above question is already posted but i have re-posted because of some unclear doubt

My answer was 'C'
i need explanation why 'C' is incorrect?

thanks

Can you please share your reasoning behind C

Because C seems out of context, as we are not concerned about the guidelines news organizations follow, but we are concerned with the REASON for increase in the news coverage.

Is the reason increase in accidents or is it increase in the number of media sources?

Hope this helps.

my reasoning for C:-

if news organization does not know the guidelines they cover all news whether big or small
irrespective what kind of mishap occured
as air plane official stated that
' the number of reported accidents is caused by an increase in the number of news sources covering airline accident'
please correct if i m wrong

Firstly, On GMAT we should not assume that since news organizations dont have any guidelines translates to the fact that they report even the smallest of incidence. It might also mean that they dont have guidelines so they dont report many accidents.

Secondly, the main point is let us assume that this is true:
Quote:
if news organization does not know the guidelines they cover all news whether big or small

and the news organizations cover all the accidents and the increase is because of this reason.

In that case option C is strengthening the argument instead of Weakening it, as it is agreeing with what the officials assert.

I hope this helps! :)
