Whenever it is rainy, Janet goes to the mall. Therefore, it must be rainy, because Janet just left for the mall.
Which of the following exhibits a parallel pattern of reasoning as the argument above?
(A) Everyone who is crazy about U2 went to the concert. Since Stacy did not go to the concert, she must not be crazy about U2.
(B) Joe's Vinyl Shop shows a profit whenever the local stadium hires extra workers. Because the stadium has recently hired extra workers, Joe's Vinyl Shop will show a profit.
(C) Cookies To Go has always endured an annual loss whenever the S&P 500 falls more than 15% in the preceeding quarter. The company had an annual loss this year. Therefore, the S&P must have fallen more than 15% in the preceeding quarter.
(D) Whenever they eat too much candy, little children become hyper and very hard to control. Since little Cameron is behaving very well, she must not have eaten too much candy.
(E) Every Thanksgiving, JC Penney gives away 20% discount coupons. I just got JC Penney disocunt coupons in the mail. Therefore, it must be Thanksgiving.

Your answer is correct, but IMO your explanation is wrong. The stimulus contains faulty logic: "whenever A happens then B happens" is the same as "if a then b". The conclusion "Hence, if B, then A" is faulty as there may be some event other than A that triggers B. Just because Janet goes shopping every time it rains doesn't mean she goes shopping ONLY when in rain. (Suppose she goes shopping no matter what? Also, note that this is quite different than: "It always rains before Janet shops"). Of all of the choices, only C has similar faulty logic.

C and E both have the same faulty logic.
C is well understood by every one. Let me focus on E
statement : A then B
correct logic - if not B then not A
Faulty Logic - if B then A
Thanks giving -> discount coupon from JC Penny
Corect logic is "No discount Coupon means No Thanks Giving"
Faulty Logic is "Discount Coupon means Thanks giving"
If you dont study then you will fail
if you did not fail then you must have studied ( otherwise you would have failed for this reason alone if not for any other reason )
Assignment of A and B is very important.
A - S&P falls by ore than 15%
B - Company's Loss
A - Thanksgiving
B - Discount coupons
This question is debatable.

yeah...
the flaw pattern is
if A, then B
If B, then A
C and E both match

Hi
I read the same post and the explaination by AkamaiBrah. Great one indeed.
E does not say the person got cupons from J.C Penny. Had the statement read I got Coupons from J.C Penny, So it must be Thanksgiving. Then E will be using parallel faulty logic with respect to the question. So We can eliminate E.
I guess C stands out

E does not say the person got cupons from J.C Penny--really?
I read: I just got JC Penney disocunt coupons in the mail.
Still insist that the person left couponless?
