Where do I stand? [#permalink] New post 29 Jul 2005, 23:14
Hi Linda,
I was wondering if you could evaluate my application.

Target session: Fall 2006
Age: 27
Citizenship: Ukraine
Location: Los Angeles, permanent resident
GMAT: 1st attempt - 680 (Q49, V35) 07/28/2005 (now I like the challenge of getting 700+ even better)

Education:
BS in Mathematics from Pennsylvania State University 1999, GPA 3.67, took 2 graduate level classes senior year, worked 20 h/w as research assistant in EE department for 2 years, published a paper in IEEE.

Work Experience:
Joined one of a few successful startups in 1999 and still work there as a systems engineer 8-), was by far the youngest person in my department, earned my permanent residency, served as technical lead several times, completed professional certifications.

Community Service:
Administrating two community web sites: Russian Linux community (since 1999) and Russian community in America (since 2003).

Now the challenge…
What are my chances of getting into Stanford?
Schools next on my list (2) Berkeley, (3) UCLA, (4) USC
I am still thinking if I should apply to MIT.

Based on my experience with high tech startups, I would like to continue my career in general management/entrepreneurship of startups/companies revolving around complex scientific ideas.
Stanford comes out as the best fit. I know first hand how much impact this institution has on The Market in high-tech industry - Silicon Valley. From personal perspective, my parents live in Santa Clara. I would very much like to end up somewhere close to them.
I think I can make an interesting case out of my work experience. From your experience, does being a part of a startup almost from the beginning, watching it to become a successful enterprise, and working with engineering teams composed entirely of CalTech PhDs or former Cisco R&D employees sound unique enough?
I also have a question regarding essay tone. From what I have been reading, it is suggested to talk about yourself. If I have a specific example of the idea and the group, I would like to be a part of in an upcoming venture, would it be worth mentioning in detail in one of the essays? Do admission committees want to hear about it, or is a general statement about my future plans sufficient?
