"Where else have you applied?" Question [#permalink] New post 08 Jan 2013, 14:04
Hi everyone,

How would you address this "Where else have you applied?" question during an interview? I've searched on this forum / other websites but haven't found much.

Would you take the question literally and tell the interview about where else you've submitted applications to? Or would you try to address this more "eloquently"...? (ex. "I am applying to a few programs on the east coast, blah blah, but this school is my first choice for xxx and yyy...")

It's one way that adcoms can use to call the bluff of applicants. For example,

Why is Tuck a good fit for you?

"Tuck is an environment that I can excel in due to its small classes, remote proximity, and...."

What other programs are you applying to?

Columbia, Booth, Wharton

That's a quick way to fail the smell test!

Not a fan of this question! I am wondering if answering honestly is one of the reasons I got waitlisted at Duke...

I think that trying to play coy might backfire (after all, they are adcom and certainly would be familiar with the "schools on the east coast"). Name a school or two on your short list that are similar in some way (culture, size, location, and ranking) and then leave it at that. I don't think you need to list each and every school if you don't want to.

Hopefully this is not your safety school? That's a place I could see running into issues if the school is worried about yield and thinks you might not attend.
