The religion of the Zoros was characterized by animal sacrifice. The reason being that the Zoros wanted to appease their gods when these deities were believed to be angry.

IMO, 2 nd sentence is incomplete: there is no verb.

Is it right usage --- The reason being that ?? Is "Because of" not preferred here ??

were believed -- Is this passive ??

Please help. This sentence will clear a lot of my doubts ...

"The reason being" is incomplete.
"were believed" is passive.
