Where is the "threshold" of work experience? [#permalink] New post 30 Jan 2012, 13:17
I just recently started my trek to an MBA instead of a JD and I am looking for work experience. I am a bit confused as to what work experience actually "counts" towards MBA admissions. Do internships have any weight to them? If you could describe a few example jobs that look great that would be helpful. Also, what sorts of extracurricular softs, like business clubs, could one join?

What do you mean by threshold? Any work experience can be good for business school, which rules out no previous experience. Yes, internships are helpful, especially if they are in companies from which internships are hard to get. And yes they count, but not towards your amount of time worked (i.e. professional experience, which includes only full time work)

As for extra curriculars, the best bets are to go for a) things you like b) a diverse mix of things c) at least one volunteer position/community service.

If you go for things you enjoy (be it a business club, toastmasters, sports club, religious club) you will be more likely to do it more and to make more of an impact, which they are ALWAYS looking for.

Thank you for your response. Sorry about my phrasing, what I mean is what sort of work experience actually counts? I.E. I can't go get a job being a cashier somewhere and have it as worthwhile work experience. My mom is a teacher and I could volunteer at her school but I'm not sure if it'd be a conflict of interest if I went in there with her.

I majored in History so it might be difficult for me to get business experience compared to other majors (backed out of law school). My friend, who is in finance, showed me a link for a pretty good company where they do some sort of graduate rotation that puts you in a desired sector for a 2 year training program. They have a couple different areas like finance, marketing, innovation, etc. I'm not sure if such a thing would be a good idea or not.

It depends on the programs you are applying to. If you are going for the top programs, you'll need longer and more quality work experience, although there is no clear minimum.

Okay, I gotcha. No, waitering and cashiering etc. is not work experience. I wouldn't even put them on my resume. They should be a minimum of professional post (although perhaps there you only brought people coffee as a summer intern, but we do want it to look good on paper). As for volunteering at your mom's school, there's no conflict of interest. That's just you volunteering, which is wonderful.
