The question tests your knowledge to pick out the elements compared in this sentence. This is a comparison question.

(A) Whereas in mammals the tiny tubes that convey nutrients to bone cells are arrayed in parallel lines, in birds the tubes : mammals vs birds : correct comparison.
(B) Whereas the tiny tubes for the conveying of nutrients to bone cells are arrayed in mammals in parallel lines, birds have tubes that Tiny tubes vs Birds. Incorrect.
(C) Unlike mammals, where the tiny tubes for conveying nutrients to bone cells are arrayed in parallel lines, birds’ tubes Mammals vs Tubes : Incorrect

The core is what is being compared with what: It is the tubes in mammals with tubes in birds; all other permutation combinations are just out. Looking at it, it is clear that only A does it meticulously.

"conveying" in B distorts parallelism, same thing in C. "whom" in D refers to objects, but mammals is subject. Also, "who/whom" are used for people (though it might be used for living individuals at large, in either case, D is incorrect). E doesn't make sense because it makes a general statement about tiny tubes, and then goes on to say that this general rule doesn't apply to birds. This doesn't make sense. The "which" clause throws you off because it creates an incorrect assumption that mammals are being compared to birds, but that's not true because inessential clauses can be completely removed and the "core" of the sentence should still make sense. If you remove the inessential, what is it we're comparing? So, E has comparison problems.

A has correct comparison indicator "whereas", and CLEARLY compares mammals to birds, or more specifically the tubes of mammals to the tubes of birds.
