Which Bschools to apply [#permalink] New post 02 Dec 2011, 12:06
I am Indian Male.I have 4 years of IT experience .
I scored a 740 on Gmat and 2.99 GPA in my Engineering
I wanted to get into Strategy Management and in the long term goal is to start my own venture
What Bschools in the US should i apply to ?
I think The top 3 Harvard , Stanford and wharton are beyond my reach .
The other Bschools that are still on my radar are
1)Stern
2)Duke
3)Chicago
4)Columbia
5)Guizueta
6)Tuck
7)UNC Kenan Flagler
8)LBS
Would you be so kind as to guide which college could be good for IT engineers who want to get into strategy management as a short term goal and entrepreneurship in the long run .
I could give you more information if what i have provided is not enough

Dear mundasingh123,

You have a decent profile but we need more details for a better assessment. On a positive front, you have a good GMAT score that will pull you above the average IT candidates who form a major part of the competition.

what is your role in your current organization? What are the major achievements at work? Do you have any international experience? While we do a detailed Profile Evaluation, answers to these questions will help us do a brief assessment.

You have a very long list at this stage of application when we are very close to R2 for most schools. I suggest you cut it down to a maximum of 3-4 schools to spend effective time on the app. A good mix of stretch and safe schools would be ideal. As a suggestion, you can apply to Booth, Emory, UNC and Columbia/Tuck.

feel free to call us if you want to discuss in detail.

I have 7 months canadian experience with a very prominent IT firm that carers to all the banks in Canada
Since i was a senior software engineer , I cant quantify my achievements in the form of business impact. My achievements are completing a project from design to off-shoring under a time crunch .I have taken inititiatives to streamline processes at my company ,thus saving time spent on activities by 10% .
ETC
I quit my job when i was a senior software engineer to explore opportunities in international trade .Currently i am trying to start my own business .
The reason that i am still with a long list is that i just took the gmat on 9th nov and was busy with the ISB apps until now .
i know i got to shortlist the schools real fast .
Any particular reason you are leaving out Duke

Hi mundasingh123,

You have a fairly decent profile. The only downside that I can think of is the quality of essays that were put in earlier. It is possible for a person in any level to put his contribution in terms of the business impact it had had. That is what shows professional maturity and broad business outlook. That is what B-schools want to see.

While you were working on your project, you may not have realized the impact on your team/organization, some introspection and research will help you quantify your contribution.

Another area that we would like to know is your career goals and how are you projecting that story. Each application requires a significant amount of introspection and thus time. That is why I suggest you limit your number of schools and try to put in quality in the ones shortlisted. This will help you focus on the quality rather than the quantity.

what i mean by quantifying is that a software programmer is in no circumstances to say that he saved so and so money by finishing the project earlier than was expected .He is unaware of the investment in the project . Metrics such as Hourly rates per programmer are not disclosed to him .
Impact on Team / organization could just be expressed in abstract terms .The hierarchical structure that is followed in IT organizations makes it very difficult to understand the business impact .

Hi mundasingh123,

Of course you may not see the direct impact on revenues. What I meant is, not your work directly, but you should at least have an idea of the impact your project is having on the company.. Is it generating revenues? How much? How critical is your project to the company?

Of course other quantifiable measures are process based as in the example that you quoted. But unless impact is quantified, it is not measurable and if it is not measurable, it cannot be improved.

Hope that helps.
