Which GMAT score should I use? [#permalink] New post 16 Oct 2010, 10:57
Test 1: 720 (94th %tile) -- Q44 (68th %tile) / V45 (98th %tile) / AWA 6.0
Test 2: 710 (92nd %tile) -- Q47 (77th %tile) / V40 (89th %tile) / AWA 6.0

Ugh, don't ask me what happened on Verbal for my GMAT retake. I swear that clock was rigged hehe. The most aggravating part was that the test (as with all verbal sections IMO) wasn't even difficult. I was just too focused on getting every answer perfect and kept double checking my answers since I knew a high verbal was my ticket to a super high score. Alas, I totally forgot to keep track of the time and ended up rushing through 20q's in 24 mins... yeah, rookie mistake. Oh well.

So now which score should I submit on my applications?? (I did elect to automatically send my scores when I took the GMAT but I am asking about the online application where they ask for details)

The schools to which I am applying if that makes a difference: MIT, Yale, CBS, and maybe NYU.

Work background is in finance (perhaps giving credence to my profile if I use the 720 low quant score). Thanks in advance for the help!!! I am pretty new to the board (first post!) and really am having a tough time deciding which score to submit with the application or if that even matters since adcom will see both scores from my understanding (is this true?).

Personally, i think the 710 would play a greater role. My reason is as follows:

The difference between a 710 and a 720 is nominal, if any. For top b-schools, they see a whole bunch of 7xx's that you will not be admitted simply because you have a 720 or a 710.

The 720 score has a quant score that will probably make the adcoms wince a bit. At 68% percentile, that quant score will not go well with some quant-heavy schools, such as wharton. In the 710 case, the 77% Quant score is close enough to the 80% threshold that it won't be that big of a problem with AdCom. With your verbal score being that high for both test, a 98% percentile or a 89% percentile is not going to make that big of a difference in the adcom's eyes. What the adcom will see from either a 89% or a 98% is that this person knows his English well.

This is why I'd choose the 710.

Use the higher score.
But I wouldn't stress too much over a 10 point difference and a slight difference in the Q/V ratio. Most schools look at all the scores (I know Yale does). I would just focus on the essays.
