Which of the following best completes the passage below? In opposing government regulation of business, conservatives often appeal to the Jeffersonian ideal of limited government, expressing the wish that government would “get off the backs of the American people.” Yet, paradoxically, many of these same conservatives address questions of private morality, such as those dealing with sexual behavior, by calling for______ (A) a return to the restrictive sexual morality of the Victorian era (B) a strengthening of the role of the family in setting moral norms for society (C) a limitation on the amount of sexually provocative material appearing in books, motives, and television shows (D) greater freedom for individuals to choose their own way of handling sexual issues (E) an increased governmental role in the regulation and control of private sexual behavior
I said c but OA is....... Could you please explain why not C.
E - my choice .. C is not correct because conservastist look for increased government regulation on the subject ..of private morality... In C the govt regulation is sought in publications , book etc ..which is a public material .. E connets the best
Conservatives on one hand are saying that government should limit its regulation of business. These same conservatives address questions of private morality by calling goverment to increase its regulation.
Limited government intervention yet paradoxically increased government role.
-- Keywords - 'limited government' and 'Yet, paradoxically'. In the argument, conservatives on one side are opposing the governments increasing role in business. Thus favoring 'limited government'. 'Yet, paradoxically' leads you to other view of conservatives i.e. greater roles of government in dealing with private issues such as sexuality. Hence the correct answer choice must have greater government role.
(A) a return to the restrictive sexual morality of the Victorian era -- Irrelevant. Hence A cannot be a correct answer choice.
(B) a strengthening of the role of the family in setting moral norms for society -- Here the conservatives are asking for increased government role and nothing related to family. Hence B cannot be a correct answer choice.
(C) a limitation on the amount of sexually provocative material appearing in books, motives, and television shows -- Here though its trying to restrain the private sexuality issue, but the answer choice is too specific by providing means of restricting it. Hence C cannot be a correct answer choice.
(D) greater freedom for individuals to choose their own way of handling sexual issues -- This is an opposite answer. Hence D cannot be a correct answer choice.
(E) an increased governmental role in the regulation and control of private sexual behavior -- This exactly pin points to the conservatives point i.e. greater governmental role in private issues. Hence E is a correct answer choice.
I chose this over C because a limitation is subjective. The limit that the government set can be acceptable for those who wish to indulge in the behavior they are trying to limit. Whereas a regulation seems to impose a much stronger set of rules in which a certain sexual behavior has to follow. I could see how C would sound right though.
both C and E are favoring govt restriction.the only difference in C is "government' is not mentioned. But doesn't 'limiting' refer to restrictions? Furthermore, in E, i dont get 'increased'. does the question says anything about increase or decrease?
Taking ,"In opposing government regulation of business...." as a key phrase, I originally answered C because I thought the contrast should be made with a business practice (publication business in this case).
However, E is a better answer here as the passages states "...address questions of private morality..." _________________
