Many companies have been pushing for a three-week extension of daylight saving time, which would mean that the sun would continue to set an hour later during the fall months. The owners of a chain of convenience stores, for example, expect to gain $15 million a year in additional sales, mostly from people who tend to______ (A) stay away from these stores after dark (B) stay outdoors during the fall months (C) spend more money in the fall (D) spend less money in the fall (E) shop at these stores when they are pressed for time Whats wrong with B? Exactly! B is irrelevant. We need to look for an answer choice that gives us a reason the extra sunlight will be beneficial and that's what we get in A. This is a great example of why one should always attempt to "predict" the answer before moving on to the answer choices. Doing so eliminates B-E since these choices are completely irrelevant.

Initially I choose B because of the reason that only the people staying outdoors have the chance of buying more. But the stores will only have the additional sales if the people who tended to (or used to) stay away from these stores after dark buy more. So A indeed. The stem should be clearer to use "tended" or "used to". I think it's more of a trap

I do not agree with official answer, i.e. A. sun will set at particular time and changing clock won't make come dark earlier or later. So if I do not shop after dark then I will not shop once it is dark, irrespective of time on my clock. Thus A is wrong. I chose C because there was no other good candidate. If people buy more in fall and if I can extend my working hours, it is probable that more people will come to shop for that extra hour and more sales...

Please let me know if my reasoning is correct here....

Answer IMO is A.
Here is the explanation -

Say in second week in Nov somewhere on the east coast sun sets at 6pm. Because of extension of DST, then time would be 7pm.
So essentially there are more hours to shop for people who shop only during daylight.

By process of elimination -
B - Stay outdoors during fall months. Say, outdoors means not at home. There is no correlation to time of the day, its a general statement about people who like to spend time outside during those months.

C - Spend more money during fall. No relation to time, they just spend more money during the season.

D - Same as C

E - The stores are not changing their operating hours. If it closed at 9pm, it will still close at 9pm. If people had 4 hours to shop after 5pm, they are still going to have 4 hours. So, this can't be a good choice.
