Which of the following most logically completes the argument below?
The expansion of large-scale farming in Africa and Asia has destroyed much of the
natural vegetation on which elephants have historically depended, forcing them to
turn to cultivated land to satisfy their enormous appetites. As a result, farmers have
lost millions of dollars worth of crops annually. Yet even if elephant sanctuaries were
created on a widespread basis to guarantee elephants sufficient natural vegetation, the
raiding would likely persist, since
A. when elephants forage for food, they typically travel in herds.
B. Foraging elephants have been known to cause substantial damage even to
plants that they do not eat.
C. Some of the land where crops have suffered extensive damage from elephants
has been allowed to return to its natural state.
D. Elephants tend to prefer cultivated crops to wild vegetation as a food source.
E. Elephant sanctuaries are usually created in areas that are rich in the natural
vegetation on which elephants have historically depended.

D
[D. Elephants tend to prefer cultivated crops to wild vegetation as a food source.]

The elephants have grown accustomed to eating cultivated crops and so will still raid cultivated land.

A. when elephants forage for food, they typically travel in herds. [Out of scope of the argument – eliminate it]
B. Foraging elephants have been known to cause substantial damage even to
plants that they do not eat. [This is true that the Foraging elephants can cause wide damages but nothing in the argument that mentions the food that not eat – eliminate it]
C. Some of the land where crops have suffered extensive damage from elephants
has been allowed to return to its natural state. [Nothing that is specified in the argument – eliminate it]
D. Elephants tend to prefer cultivated crops to wild vegetation as a food source. [Hold it]
E. Elephant sanctuaries are usually created in areas that are rich in the natural
vegetation on which elephants have historically depended. [Nothing in the argument that alludes this – eliminate it]

I have trouble doing "complete the passage" types.
I (apparently wrongly) chose B on this.
I thought D was introducing new piece of info and therefore cannot be a correct answer.
Any further explanations would be appreciated. :)

Answer: D

I chose C here.
The 1st stmt of the stem says that elephants depend on natural vegetation. So, how can we jump from that to say they are now going to eat cultivated (artificial vegetation)? as mentioned in D.

I was about to choose option other than D, but end up choosing D only. D uses word as wild vegetation.....I have question here...stem talks about natural vegetation is that the same as wild vegetation?

yeah probably natural and wild might mean the same in the light of cultivated land.

The only choice that comes close is B. How ever, Natural vegetation and cultivated lands need to be in proximity or overlapped, which is a big assumption to make. Hence D
