Re: The expansion of large-scale farming in Africa and Asia has destroyed [#permalink]

Background:The expansion of large-scale farming in Africa and Asia has destroyed much of the natural vegetation on which elephants have historically depended, forcing them to turn to cultivated land to satisfy their enormous appetites.

Premise:As a result, farmers have lost millions of dollars worth of crops annually.

Conclusion: Yet even if elephant sanctuaries were created on a widespread basis to guarantee elephants sufficient natural vegetation, the raiding would likely persist,

Reason for the conclusion :since __________________.

A. when elephants forage for food, they typically travel in herds. irrelevant. just told us the characteristic of the elephant.
B. Foraging elephants have been known to cause substantial damage even to plants that they do not eat. seems relevant, but still can't explain the point why they come to cropland but not just stay in wild.
C. Some of the land where crops have suffered extensive damage from elephants has been allowed to return to its natural state. irrelevant, told us nothing about the reason why elephant would raid the crops
D. Elephants tend to prefer cultivated crops to wild vegetation as a food source. That told us why elephant would continue to raid the crops because they like it much than wild vegetation.
E. Elephant sanctuaries are usually created in areas that are rich in the natural vegetation on which elephants have historically depended. Weaken, this option told us that elephant should more likely to eat in wild, not to raid the crops.

D should be the answer.
If the elephants prefer cultivated land over natural veg. Theyll continue to raid the former even when the latter is available.

I wonder why not E?
My reasoning was since it stated in the passage that the their historical dependent area get destroyed for farming, they're ended up eating crops, and why that even though there are sanctuaries created for them, the raiding still persist, why? they leave the sanctuary to go back to their historical dependent area, and since now already became farms, so they're eating the crops. Seems only E that showing the connection between sentences in the passage.

As per the timer stats, the options B and D have statistics for good.

The prethought for my assumption here ( since _____ means it's a question of assumption) was that what if the widespread natural vegetation made is not sufficient enough for these elephants.

I rejected option B because of the reason - the option talks about foods that are not eaten by the elephants are destroyed. But still they ate their whole food right? The possibility of their raid can't be known from the information about damaging other types of food.

Option D suggets that they have preference. This will surely make them wander and thus is our answer.

Rishav

Hi Experts,

I wonder that Why B is incorrect?

It's stated that elephant sanctuaries were created on a widespread basis to guarantee elephants "sufficient" natural vegetation, so i think that the elephant would not come to eat crops in cultivated land.

But not eating crops in cultivated land doesn't mean that elephant would not damage the crops. So I think it is reasonable to state B, too.

Please explain.
Thank you.

Hi

The stimulus focuses on the damage caused to cultivated crops by elephants that are looking for food. This is an important consideration in the reasoning for why elephants damage crops.

Looking at the last sentence, the stimulus states, "the raiding would likely persist" ie; the earlier state of affairs would continue to exist. Since the earlier state of affairs involves elephants "eating" the cultivated crops, we should look for answer options that suggest that this habit would continue.

Option (B) talks about wanton damage to cultivated crops for no specific benefit to the elephants. This is a leap of faith not supported by the stimulus.

Hope this helps.

I understand why option D is the right answer. However, I am little concerned with the word "Wild". The conclusion talks about natural vegetation whereas wild vegetation is mentioned in option D. Can natural and wild be used interchangeably?
