y + | y | = 0
| y | is always positive irrespective of y being +ve or -ve, therefore for y + | y | = 0 implies y must be 0 or -ve.
y<=0 is the right answer.

Another way you can solve this problem is just to plug in numbers. Try a 0, a positive number, and a negative number, and you'll see that the solution doesn't hold for positive numbers, but does for the other two.
