While controversy rages over whether the sign language taught to some great apes is truly human-like speech, there is no similiar dispute that our powers of communication are greater by far than that of any animal.
A) are greater by far than that of any animal
B) are far greater thatn that of any other animal
C) are greater by far than any other animal
D) are far greater than those of any other animal
E) have been far greater thatn those of other animals
pls post your final answer choice with line of reasoning (after using POE).
My objective: To determine whether a certain pronoun can only be used as a "singular" pronoun.

well, my research over google says that "powers of communication" should be followed by "those" instead of "that"
my FA is D
other choices can be easily eliminated. As the sentence is in the present tense and hence the use of "are" is correct - eliminate E (the easiest to get shot down)
"are greater by far" is an improper construction for the sense intended, it should be reframed as "are far greater than" hence eliminate A and C
now left with B and D, here I wanted to clarify whether it should be "powers of communication than that/those"...for this google was of some help - I eliminate B...choose D!

"well, my research over google says that "powers of communication" should be followed by "those" instead of "that""
Can you show paste what you used to do a search on google. Before posting the question on this board i did a search on google "pronoun that singular".
"now left with B and D, here I wanted to clarify whether it should be "powers of communication than that/those"...for this google was of some help - I eliminate B...choose D"
Just like you i narrowed down my AC (answer choices) to B,D. I was "stumped" between the 2. Only difference was "that" versus "those". I guessed and went with "that".
I was doing a "mock test" ~1.5 minute per question. I guess the important lesson i learnt was that "that" is a singular pronoun while "those" is plural. I never knew this..........
As always your help is greatly appreciated.

In case you are confused sometime, you can take hints from the answer choices.
All answers use "are" or "have". These are used for plural nouns. This should give you enough hint that you;re dealing with a plural noun.
That said, you might want to revise that singular/plural forms of the subjective and objective case. Without knowing these you will face a lot of problems.

30s and D.
"our power of communication" --> "those of other animals "
Should be "are" not "have been"

A- greater by far than... INCORRECT
B- greater by far than... INCORRECT
C- greater by far than... INCORRECT
E- have been... NOT REQUIRED.
By POE, you can get to only one correct option
I love standardized testing

Many people recommend the webster.comnet website.
http://webster.commnet.edu/grammar/cases.htm
http://webster.commnet.edu/grammar/pronouns1.htm
The website has lots of stuff, absorb whatever you need from there. They have quite a few quizzes. If you have time then you might want to try them out.
