Why would you select "what appears" over "what appear" ?

Because appears refers to the second most massive dinosaur which is singular.

I chose D over E without noticing difference between "appears" and "appear" because I chose "from" over "which are from".

While digging in the Egyptian desert...who is digging not huge fossil bones but Paleontologists. So A, B, and C out.

D) fossil bones is plural so appears is wrong. This answer is tempting because of its concision.

E) which are refers to fossil bones and plural..plural correct. appear to be is also in agreement with the noun fossil bones.

This is my take and I am not sure why OA is D. Is it from SC1000?
