I think the rule with the word "like" is that it should be used when you are listing items that are similar to the main thing of comparison.

I didn't explain that very well, but here's a link that could help: http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/li ... ch-as.aspx

While the base salary for the top five officers of the company did not change from 1990 to 1991, cuts were made nonsalary compensation, as in allowances for overseas assignments and club memberships.

(A) cuts were made nonsalary compensation, as in
--> implies something called CUTS were made NONSALARY COMPENSATION--> incorrect meaning

(B) cuts were made in such nonsalary compensation as
--> correct; also correctly uses the such....as... construction; SUCH AS is used to introduce example

(C) cuts were made in such nonsalary compensation as those in
--> after as we need further example/description for nonsalary compensation

(D) cuts in nonsalary compensation were made in areas like
--> like incorrectly used to introduce examples

(E) there were cuts made in nonsalary compensation, in areas like
--> same fallacy as D

Hope this helps...!!!

Here, the intent is to provide examples of Non Salary Compensation. The examples in this case are allowances for overseas assignments and allowances for club memberships.

Thus, B is the best answer.

As far C is concerned it conveys the meaning Allowances for non salary compensation as THE ALLOWANCE for overseas assignments and allowances for club memberships. But As I mentioned earlier, the intent is not this. Thus , C is incorrect.
