Whom to use as a 2nd recommendation. [#permalink] New post 14 Jul 2008, 06:35
Hi everyone,

I would like some advice on who I should call for a 2nd recommendation.

My first recommendation is my supervisor, and I don't think having a co-worker as my 2nd recommendation is a wise choice, because he'll just rehash what my supervisor saids.

I'm thinking of maybe asking one of my graduate professor?

Thanks ahead.

Hi

What is your work experience? If you are a consultant, you can use a client. If you aren't, try maybe a manager in another department that you have had to work with.

Graduate professors would usually only work if you have worked with them in some capacity for an extended period if you are a new grad and they can talk about your leadership/team skills. It may not be very useful for the adcom to know (others here can confirm this) how good you are at research. As far academics - transcripts and GPA can confirm.

Hope this helps.

I used my immediate supervisor and a senior manager. I would say peer and a professor arent the best options. I would only use a professor if you "worked" with them.

The more interesting, compelling, or humorous you message the more likely I am to respond.

Yea, they really don't want a professor. I guess that kinda lends to the theory that your work exp is more important than your ug gpa.

I would suggest you go for a client or another manager.

I think you should pick the person who knows you best and will help you stand out from your peers. If you have a team lead, client, or coworker who has a lot of insight about who you are, and why you should be admitted I'd go with that person.
