Why can't I do GMAT math?!!!!!

Got a 41 on Quant. I graduated top of my class from a top engineering school...AND I'm Asian. Is this unheard of? Factors, multiples, consecutive numbers, basic number properties questions combined with data sufficiency are the bane of my existence. I'm using the error log but the questions seem to take different forms each time. Do you really get better in quant with more practice? Any advice?

bit of critical view on my prep tells me most questions that I'm getting wrong are due to bad assumption or going above and beyond whats being asked in the challenge...which really translates more the the focus, concentration and discpline...! offcourse this is baselined with the fact everyone including me have average math skills...!

Each person is different.

Practicing more questions does help you familiarize yourself with the range of concepts being tested. But it also helps to step back and recognize the overall frameworks being used and the different booby traps that are in the question.

It's good that you are doing an error log. Just don't spend too much time marking which ones you got right or wrong. What matters more is that you redo the questions you got wrong---recognize why you got them wrong. Ask yourself what you could have done differently so you won't make the same mistake next time. Are there other similar questions that you also got wrong? Look at those again as well.

If you are getting to the point where you keep getting the same kinds of questions wrong, then you should step back and rethink your overall approach. Keep the big picture in mind when you are stuck with your head in the details.

Make sure you are using the right materials: best-gmat-math-prep-books-reviews-recommendations-77291.html

MGMAT Number properties and MGMAT Word Translations Guide are great.
If you want a quicker review, you can use the Kaplan Math Workbook (but don't get both - not much value).

I asked myself the same question when I first started studying. Then it got better after I focused on the basics and fundamentals and doing a lot of practice questions. Hang in there. It will get better.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll take a look at the MGMAT Number properties book as well (currently using GMAT Hacks Math Bible). I agree with the comment that fundamentals (just more difficult versions of them) are getting me. I'll let you know how it goes this time!
